Welcome to our farm!

Well, the home search is finally over. Our old house is sold to a new family with three little boys, and we closed on our new home eight days ago. The move was completed six days ago, and unpacking has begun in earnest. So, without further ado…

Welcome to our farm!!!

Reawakened dreams

Since I was about 24, I’ve wanted to live on a homestead. It’s been dream for nearly half my life, and one that’s been out of reach for most of it. I’ve tried to make my home a bit more “homestead-y” wherever I’ve lived, but I’ve never actually had much land to do anything with. Still, I was undeterred and tried to grow some of my own veggies and actually use the land a bit. But it never worked out because there wasn’t much to be done with a patch of grass.

That is likely changing soon.

Back from my hiatus – and as a homeowner!

We are officially homeowners for the first time in our lives, and after almost ten years of marriage!  We closed on our lovely little house in Port Orchard, Washington on 10/27, took possession the next day, and moved in Thursday.

Our new town!

Our new town! When we’re standing in our driveway, we can hear the seals barking down on the waterfront (of Sinclair Inlet, which is part of Puget Sound), which is about a 1/2 mile away.

Moving Adventures – Holiday road!

My blog has fallen by the wayside. Moving does that. I thought about updating multiple times, but when the situation was fluid, I was brimming with anxiety and unease and the last thing I wanted to do was put that all down for posterity.  Now, though, I’m on the other side of it and now it’s time to chronicle the journey.

I started my new role in Seattle on July 27th, but the house we were moving into wasn’t available for possession until August 15th.  As a result, I lived in corporate housing for a little over two weeks.  Having my own tiny apartment in downtown Seattle was kind of awesome.  I loved the chance to have the experience, and Skyping/FaceTiming with my husband and mom made the situation much more bearable.  I flew back to Indianapolis, arriving in the wee hours of August 13th.  The movers had come the week before so our townhouse was pretty empty, but we still had a lot to deal with (see the first bullet point below!) and then we hit the road that night at 7:30pm. Tim, Roxie, me, and a ton of junk crammed into and atop of a Chevy HHR.  I threatened to play “Holiday Road” from National Lampoon’s Vacation for the duration of the drive, but the idea was quickly vetoed. (Still not happy about that. I hummed it for the first twenty miles instead.) From the moment we pulled away from the home we’d known, it was nothing short of an adventure.  Read on… Continue reading

Materializing memories

When preparing to move, rooting through boxes of crap is inevitable.  You find things like your high school yearbooks, which you haven’t looked at in years because you’re friends with most of those people on Facebook anyway.  You find your collection of New Kids on the Block memorabilia from when you were just a kid, and your husband urges you to throw it all away, only to receive a heated glare because your Joe McIntyre doll isn’t going anywhere. And with that, everything changes!

Friday morning at 5:40am, I returned home from Seattle, where I’d gone for an interview for an internal transfer within the very large company for which I work.  Friday evening at 5:25pm, I got the call notifying me that I’d done very well on my interviews and would be receiving a job offer.  So with that, I’m happy to report that WE’RE MOVING TO SEATTLE!!!!!!

I’ve only just arrived home from work (I was on my way in when I got the call), so it really hasn’t sunk in yet.  The one thing I know without a doubt is that God answers prayers, sometimes in a big way!  There is so much to do and plan and prepare for in the next few weeks!  My blog is about to take a major shift because our lives as we know it are starting fresh, 2,300 miles to the west!

More later.  It’s bedtime!

Oh! I forgot!

Because it was rainy and foggy yesterday (my favorite weather), I drove over to the complex we’re moving to and snapped a few pictures.  I really love this particular one, which is of the row of townhouses on our street.  Ours is near the end, generally in front of that SUV.  Totally excited!!!!!  We presently live in a house with stinky well water and ground outside that is literally infested with the biggest slugs I’ve ever seen (and they’re all trying to get inside!)
