Raging winds and lessons learned

Author’s note: Post started on 11/12 and finished on 11/14…

The past few weeks have been a flurry of activity, book-ended by mornings that start long before the sun comes up and end hours after it’s already set (which here in the Pacific northwest is at about 4:30pm right now!) During these busy times, I’ve learned a few lessons that I’ve been reflecting on today, which happens to be not only a day when I’m stuck at home with bronchitis while a wind storm rages outside my door, but also my 36th birthday.

Call Me Laura…

Yesterday, I took a trip to Walnut Grove. I was a modern day Laura Ingalls, blazing through the Polar Vortex or Snowpocalypse 2014 or whatever it was that made Indianapolis slightly colder than Antartica. Bundled against the temperature, we used candles and oil lamps to help heat our home because our furnace couldn’t beat the cold drafts coming through our doors and icing up our window frames like a freezer badly in need of defrosting. We scrounged for food. We only went outside when necessary.  And most importantly (and most pioneer-like), we were without internet. Or cable.  *gasp*

A night of Bluegrass

So ever since I heard “Country Boy” by Ricky Skaggs when I was just a kid, I’ve loved Bluegrass.  My dad loved to listen to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights, even though it came through sounding scratchy and so far away on his old radio.  He loved Bill Monroe and I remember sitting with him as we listened, watching his foot tap along to the beat.
